Hibakusha is a handwriting mural project that won the award Artefici del nostro tempo by Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.
The project consisted in the handwriting Hibakusha, which is the translitteration of the Japanese word survivors. I created this piece as a tribute to Setsuko Thurlow and ICAN - International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons, invaluable activists for the abolishment of nuclear weapons worldwide.
Like pitch sticking on the bodies of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaski, I traced rugged black ink strokes to engrave the shame of one of the most inhumane pieces of the history of the modern era. By contrast, the curved and harmonious composition aimed at celebrating hope - an ode to the renaissance of humanity.
